Atm, the company that runs public transport in Milan, tries to stand at the helm of everyone in the field of innovation and establishes a collaboration agreement with Microsoft. The goal is soon said: allow the payment of the metro ticket with contactless cards. In reality, the agreement is broad and includes key areas such as cloud computing, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and machine learning (SQL Server, Azure Analysis Services, Azure SQL Data Warehouse, Power BI and Azure Machine Learning is the notebook made available to Microsoft) or these technologies able to make a digital face for local transport. Microsoft and ATM: collaboration for contactless payments
The Lombard company then chose Microsoft as a project partner, in the belief that the technology available is able to better support the integration of the new contactless payment system in the metropolitan network. The highlight is not only the obvious time saving, but also the shelter of setbacks in case of lack of coins or small denominations. The gain is also in cash, as the system automatically calculates the best rate based on the number and type of trips made.
As explained by Simonetta Moreschini, director of the PA division of Microsoft Italy, we are in front of one of the first contactless payment cases for sustainable mobility in the world. On the one hand, the technological know-how of the company Redmond and, on the other hand, the knowledge of the public transport system of the Milanese company.
A decisive step in terms of service level is expected from the badysis of business data from machine learning systems, able to quickly predict the effect of the introduction of new payment channels, observe changes in user habits and harmonize the investment on ticketing systems, reducing the fixed structure costs for the maintenance of power plants.
Paying with NFC mobile phones and smart phones
More and more, mobile payments are occurring in Italy, which simply duplicate the use of credit cards and can therefore be used with most of the latest generation POS terminals: Apple and Samsung allow you to pay with peace of mind and with more security than the credit card, as they always require confirmation between Touch ID, Face ID or PIN security, even for small amounts, which is not the case of cards contactless (usually less than 24 euros).
