Malaysian authorities are investigating the marriage between an 11-year-old Thai girl and a 41-year-old Malian Muslim who has sparked public outrage and demands that wives be banned. The rubber falls dealer Che Abdul Karim Che Abdul Hamid has secretly married the girl as the third wife in Thailand. She was one of his wives to report to the authorities. Muslim men in Malaysia can have up to 4 wives according to the law, but Muslim girls must be at least 16 years old to be able to marry with parental consent. Deputy Premier Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the marriage was illegal because it had not been approved by Sharia court and opened an investigation.

Social media photos show the groom holding the girl's hand immediately after the ceremony. Local media said that Che Abdul Karim, who is also an imam in a rural village in northeastern Kelantan State, already has two women and six children aged 5 to 18 years. The man told the Bernama news agency that his marriage was legal and that it had been approved by the girl's parents, who are poor rubber hairdressers in Malaysia. He said that he will only formalize the marriage in Malaysia when the girl turns 16 and she will stay with her parents until then. The girl has also been quoted by local media saying that she does not understand the clamor of her marriage because she is in love with Che Abdul Karim.
