A general strike was organized today in Nicaragua as part of the protest against President Daniel Ortega, who has been in control of the country for decades. A few days ago, Ortega said that he had no plans to hold early elections, as his opponents demand, and that he did not want to resign with his wife , who is vice-president of the country
. 264 people died and at least 1,800 were injured. On Thursday, July 12, five people were killed during a march in the southeast of the country: four policemen and a protester. The leader of an opposition movement, Francisca Ramirez, said the activists had been "attacked by the paramilitaries" and that some of them, armed, had fought back in the fire .
The Inter-American Court of Human Rights sent delegates to Nicaragua, concluding that the government repeatedly violated the rights of the people during the protests. According to the Court, the police and the contract security forces allegedly used excessive and disproportionate force against the protesters. The accusations, however, were rejected by the Nicaraguan Foreign Minister, who said: "A peaceful protest movement can not be confused with acts of terrorism".
