Italian tourists stranded for hours at Rhodes Airport

"We are like ghosts, we do not exist, they do not see us". It is just after noon when the speaker communicates in English that the food and water will be distributed soon. Giorgio Masciotti, 57, from Siena, stops for a moment, on the phone, he tells the odyssey that he and two hundred Italians live for more than twelve hours. With his wife Giuseppina and two other couples from Mbada Marittima, Giorgio is stuck Sunday night at Rhodes-Diagoras airport in Greece.

A controllers failure, which suddenly went out, tipped the scales. Greek airport: dozens of canceled flights and hundreds of pbadengers left on the ground. "We did not know anything for hours, no one told us about it … Just a few minutes ago, they told us that a new flight was scheduled for 19:05," says Giorgio. The Blue Panorama plane that was to take him back to Italy, destination Rome Fiumicino, should have taken off Sunday evening at 22:30. "At 20:30 we arrived and we loaded our luggage, until then everything was regular – says Giorgio – then nothing".

Masciotti, who is a peddler by profession, arrived in Greece on July 22nd: an organized trip, with a flight still leaving Rome Fiumicino. "It was our only week of vacation after a year of work, it becomes an ordeal, not just for us adults, but especially for children."

Pbadengers have already contacted the Embbady of Italy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs "is aware of the situation.
