Shoko Asahara founder and leader of the cult Aim Shinrikyo responsible for the attacks on the Tokyo metro in 1995 with sarin gas, was executed last Friday by hanging.

63-year-old Asahara, whose real name is Chizuo Matsumoto, is the first to be executed by 13 people, linked to a series of crimes committed by the cult of the "Supreme Truth" which idealized the end of the world.
Asahara was arrested in May 1995, two months after the March 20 attack on the Tokyo subway, which killed 13 people and involved at least 6,200 people. At first, Asahara denied having planned the operation, but at the 2004 trial he had admitted that he deserved a conviction for planning the execution of the attack.
