The two young engineers of Campania are the winners of the first absolute prize of the technological challenge for the health (Htc). The award was presented at the XIX Congress of the National Association of Clinical Engineers (CNA) held in Catanzaro. The two engineers from Naples, Michela D & Antò, G. Pascale Foundation e Federica Caracò, from the University of Federico II, they obtained the highest score of the technical and popular jury with the project "Evaluation of a verification protocol of the functionality of a dose reduction system installed on computerized axial tomographs ".
It is estimated that in Italy, out of more than 40 million radiological examinations performed each year, about 44% are improperly prescribed and are not strictly necessary. Cancer patients are the most exposed to these radiation during the diagnostic phase and during successive continuous checks, during treatment and after.
In their project, they verified the effectiveness of a protocol to ensure good image quality from a scanner, with greater security and less invasion. for patients, thus reducing the radiation dose by 40 to 60%. "These results," said the winners, "demonstrate the importance of updating existing technologies to improve the performance of radiological instruments to ensure more accurate patient performance and minimize potential risks. exposure to ionizing radiation ".
The Health Technology Challenge (HTC) is an initiative to give place to the presentation of experiences and innovative solutions for the many health problems, big or small, that always seem insurmountable.
The independent prize created in 2018 saw the arrival of 162 projects from all over Italy during the second edition. "A figure that represents a significant confirmation of our initiative," commented Lorenzo Leogrande, president of AIIC. "We believe that the need to share and compare the many existing and emerging projects in the world of technological innovation in the health sector is valuable for the entire health system, especially when these proposals are the result of a collaboration between our clinical and biomedical engineers, university research and the many start-ups that are a mine of concrete ideas that respond to real problems ".
