CAPODISTRIA – It is rare that the workers themselves claim the bankruptcy of the company in which they work. Yet he has arrived: Tomos, the famous Slovenian motorcycle manufacturer producing the famous moped humming-bird and of outboard motors quite common in the lagoon of Venice.
For many years, Tomos has been sailing in bad waters and employed they do not receive the salary for monthsand they say that the company also has significant debts with the suppliers, for which they have turned to the court to declare bankruptcy and get at least part of what belongs to them. The owner, Iztok Pikl, believes instead that there may be prospects for recovery and that orders are there, the problems would arise from a possible situation of low liquidity. But workers tell a different story, that of unpaid suppliers and widespread insolvency.
Tomos, in the good old days, was an industry of the state, founded in Sesana, in the heart of Karstfrom Marshal Tito in the fifties of the last century to the time of Yugoslavia, in the middle of the communist era, long before Slovenia existed as a state. Initially, she produced cicolomori under license from the Austrian company Puchbut became famous with the Colibrì moped, widely used in Europe, conceived and built entirely in society and whose version, in the seventies, had been designed by none other than Giorgetto Giugiaro.
But he also produced a big-displacement motorcycle, the Norton Commando, legendary English House, and Tomos-Norton is a rarity that today has a value in the market for collecting old motorcycles. Speaking of historical rarities, Tomos also produced cars, under license from Citroen: the Tomos-Citroen Ami6 and: Tomos-Citroen 2Cv, Yugoslav version of the famous French popular car.
After the end of communism and Yugoslavia, Tomos was privatized in 1998 and sold to Hidria Corporation, a Slovenian automotive components group, which strengthened the range and commercialized the first electric moped. In 2012, Tomos was sold to its current owner.
