Dozens of people died in a series of attacks led by the Islamic State (IS) in southern Syria, an area controlled by the government of Bashar Al Assad. In the main attack, one or two suicide bombers blew themselves up in the city of Al Suwayda, at least in one case in a market, killing more than 90 people according to the Syrian Ministry of Health. Contemporary attacks have also occurred in some villages north-east of Al Suwayda, according to the official news agency SANA . The news is still scarce and confusing, and several budgets are circulating: the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, an anti-Assad organization based in London, has spoken of more than 150 deaths. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attacks
The Sweida region, about 120 kilometers south of Damascus, has been among the least affected by the Syrian war in recent years. However, in recent weeks, Assad forces and those of Russia's allies have conducted operations in southern Syria to recapture some enclaves of the Islamic State
