Her 19-year-old son William ‘Ikaika’ Bailey fought for his life after contracting the coronavirus twice.
“It’s a parent’s worst nightmare, just watching their child suffer and not really being able to do anything,” says Cady. “He just looked so weak and I was just terrified of losing my son.”
It was a diagnosis that almost ended in heart failure.
“There was a point when I actually thought I was going to lose him,” Cady says.
Cady says her son appeared to be a healthy young adult. He graduated from Golden Valley High School last year. There he was the alternate quarterback and won the homecoming king title.
It was in mid-June that Ikaika started to feel sick.
At first, Cady thought it was just allergies.
Then came the high fever followed by a hospital visit and a positive COVID test.
“He was shivering and it was hot and then he was hot when it was cold and then the fever and the cough. It was horrible,” Cady said.
After 14 days, he was cleared. But the weeks passed and Cady said her son was not normal himself.
A visit to the doctor revealed that he had lost 20 pounds. Hours later, her feet started to swell.
It was then that Cady took him to the hospital.
“They explained to me that it was a sign of heart failure,” says Cady.
He tested positive for the coronavirus again.
Even more alarming, doctors discovered a hole in his heart and two heart valves on the verge of failure. Doctors said the hole was already there and COVID made it worse.
They had to perform surgery immediately.
Cady’s faith and the medical staff kept her strong.
Ikaika now has to take blood thinners for the rest of her life. He still has a long way to go to recover, but Cady says her son bears witness to his name.
Ikaika means “strong” in Hawaiian.
