While Southern California (and, really, the entire state) has been somewhat spared from the massive spike in coronavirus cases during this fall’s dreaded second wave, that doesn’t mean cities like Los Angeles are out of the woods when it comes to. to COVID-19 this season. In fact, quite the opposite.
“It’s no longer a problem,” Dr Barbara Ferrer, Los Angeles County director of public health, said on Monday in response to a steady increase in the total number of cases, hospitalizations and infections reported in the count. She simply added, “It’s now a wave in our cases.” There are currently 888 hospitalizations and a positivity rate of 4.1% in Los Angeles County.
California Governor Gavin Newsom also issued a similar warning on Monday, claiming people have let their guard down, according to the LA Times. In LA County, the growing numbers put an even wider reopening out of reach for many businesses, including restaurants, as the county continues to miss the benchmarks necessary for a gradual reopening. Other counties like Riverside have had to switch between being allowed to eat inside and not eat inside at all as cases fluctuate, and there are growing concerns that other southern counties from California could soon follow suit. The state announces its weekly level assignments for reopening every Tuesday.
