The NFL team announced Thursday that it has hired Chris Doyle, the former University of Iowa strength and conditioning coach, to be the team’s director of athletic performance.

Doyle, who was on staff at the University of Iowa from 1999 to 2019, was put on administrative leave from the school in June after several former Iowa players accused him of racism. Soon after, the university and Doyle agreed to go their separate ways.

However, Meyer, who was hired by the Florida-based team in January after Doug Marrone was fired, defended the hiring, saying his relationship with Doyle dates back 20 years.

Meyer watches during the Big Ten Championship game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Northwest Wildcats while working as a television analyst.
“I feel good about the hire, his expertise in this position,” Meyer mentionned during its media availability Thursday.

“I control all of our staff, and like I said the relationship goes back almost 20 years and a lot of tough questions have been asked, a lot of checking involved with all of our staff. We’ve done a really good job. control job of that one. “

Meyer previously served as a college coach at the University of Utah, University of Florida, and most recently at Ohio State.

Meyer added: “I have known the person for almost 20 years, and I can assure them that there will be nothing of any kind in the Jaguar factory.”

Meyer said he did not believe that the racism charges attributed to Doyle in Iowa would prevent Jacksonville from attracting free agents.
Shortly after being put on administrative leave in Iowa in June 2020, Doyle posted a statement on Twitter – which has since been deleted – claiming that the accusations regarding his behavior are “not true.”

Other hires Meyer made on his first NFL staff included former Detroit Lions interim head coach Darrell Bevell as offensive coordinator and Joe Cullen as defensive coordinator.
