FOXBORO, Mass. – Jakobi Meyers is perhaps the best pre-season among New England Patriots receivers at the time of Bill Belichick. But success with the team's star quarterback has so far eluded the unprepared rookie sensation.
Although Meyers captured seven passes on nine goals for a 74-yard win in Thursday's 10-3 win over the Carolina Panthers at Gillette Stadium, he failed to score any of the three assists that Tom Brady managed to trace.
"(That was) really (frustrating), because I want to go out there and do my best every day, especially as an unprepared rookie," Meyers said after the game. "But all I can do is learn from the band now, get better and do not think about it too long. … I just have to start playing, so I do not have any more 0 vs 3 performances and I can give Brady my best game every day. "
On at least two of Meyers' inconsistencies with Brady, the misfire appeared to follow the wrong path or misread. His second goal – the third and eighth in the inaugural series of the game – landed at 10 yards from Meyers after slowing down on a pole pattern.
Brady could be seen screaming for North Carolina after this failure.
"I think for all of us, you play with guys who may be new to the offense and so on," Brady said. "Sometimes they think they are not part of the road, and then a team covers some coverage and is part of the road. At the beginning of the season, this is part of this time of the year. We do not have the whole week to prepare ourselves. We are putting things in place. Yes, these are learning moments for all of us. "
For Meyers, being creaked at the future Hall of Fame was a surrealist experience.

Meyers found his pace once rookie Jarrett Stidham replaced Brady in the middle of the second quarter. Both scored seven goals nine times, including 10, 12, 14 and 19-yard passes.
During a Panthers possession late in the first half, Brady sits next to Meyers on the bench to swap some teaching points.
Meyers explained, "Tom played a long time, so when he wants to sit and talk, you give him an open ear. He just told me what I had to do, which I did not need to do. I'm just trying to listen to everything he says, good or bad, absorb it and get better.
In three pre-season games, Meyers captured 19 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns, the highest total of preliminary yards ever played by a Belichick Patriots receiver. Despite his success, which virtually secured him a spot in the 53-man roster, Meyers said Thursday's stormy exit was positive, saying everything will not be easy in the NFL.
