Jameela Jamil took to Instagram to share her thoughts on the ketogenic diet.
On Friday, the actress delivered a message to “celebrities and influencers” promoting the keto diet. “Please stop offering the keto diet to people who don’t medically need to diet,” she wrote, making sure to note that she was only directing her post to “No specific Thinfluencer”.
“It can create all kinds of disruption for people’s bodies (including their VITAL ORGANS), and they don’t have the same access to health care as you do.” Jamil went on to criticize the “before and after” photos often shared when promoting diets like keto, calling them the “** t bulls” of lighting and wardrobe.
“Take it from someone who’s done all diets under the SUN,” she says. “Stay away from fads and if you really want to change your body into something, do it for the right reasons, the right way, SLOWLY.”
In his post, Jamil also shared responses from his followers who revealed their own experiences and concerns with the diet. “I had to have my gallbladder removed,” one commenter wrote of the impact of keto. “Keto will destroy your liver as well.”
“My dad went on keto and it ended up giving him pancreatitis and had to have surgery,” another wrote.

The keto diet has been in practice for almost a century, with a history of use to manage seizures in children with epilepsy. The diet is defined as low in carbohydrates and high in protein and fat – big keto foods include oily fish, eggs, meat, and dairy. The dramatic reduction in carbohydrates required for the diet releases ketones into the bloodstream and brings the body into a metabolic state called ketosis, in which stored fat is burned more easily. Along the way, this lowers the body’s blood sugar and insulin levels.
The diet has become controversial in recent years as its popularity has increased: the advantage of the diet being that fat can be burned quickly, resulting in weight loss; the downside is that it is difficult to maintain and many believe it robs the body of essential nutrients (few fruits and vegetables are involved in keto).
“The pitfalls I see most often with keto diets: no fruit, avoiding starches, legumes (beans), and no whole grains,” Ruhs notes. “You will run out of essential nutrients and risk damaging your health.”
The keto diet can also lead to what is known as the “keto flu,” symptoms of which can include fatigue, headaches, dizziness, nausea, and constipation.
When it comes to the red flags raised by Jamil supporters, the keto diet has been proven to harm the pancreas, liver, and other organs. With so much fat to metabolize, diet can make pre-existing liver conditions worse. Studies have also shown that pancreatitis can occur, again due to the increased consumption of fat.
This appeal is not the first time Jamil has used his platform to tell the truth about diet culture. In the past, she has lambasted the Kardashians for promoting unhealthy diet teas, insisted that promotional photos of herself not be airbrushed, and been honest about her eating disorder issues. Jamil also started the I Weigh community which helped change policies regarding diet and detox products presented to minors via Instagram and Facebook.
When it comes to keto, Jami noted that it can be helpful for certain medical conditions. “I hear it can be extraordinary for some serious health issues,” Jamil noted. “But otherwise … you run the risk of creating unnecessary health problems because our world is not only obsessed with losing weight, but also how quickly we can do it.” It is not durable and it is designed to fail so that you will stay on the feed forever.
