Although The Suicide Squad director James Gunn is returning to Marvel to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. On the 3rd, DC Films president Walter Hamada said Gunn would be back for other DC projects.
Hamada confirmed the news to THR, saying Gunn is always welcome in DC.
“Gunn is always welcome no matter what he wants to do. He really has a vision and he’s a great partner with us. Whenever he wants to come back, we are ready for him, ”said Hamada, who added:“ He will come back. We have more things planned.
We already know Gunn is writing and directing several episodes of The Suicide Squad spin-off Peacemaker, which is set to star John Cena, but it looks like there could be bigger plans for Gunn and DC in the future. .
“This is what happens when you leave a brilliant man alone with his thoughts,” Cena – dressed in a full suit – said of Gunn’s scripts. “I didn’t even hear what it was [before saying yes], and when I heard it was Peacemaker, I was very excited.
The cast of The Suicide Squad share Cena’s feelings, as Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie echoed his thoughts at the film’s Westwood premiere.
“If I had read the script and didn’t know James Gunn was going to direct it, that would have been a blunt ‘no’,” said Robbie. “I said to myself, ‘No one could succeed’. It’s so specific in its brand of comedy and violence. But it was out of his imagination. He knew exactly what to do with it.
One of the main reasons DC is ready to welcome Gunn again is that The Suicide Squad, as noted by producer Charles Roven, is “under budget and has had no additional photography days – a scarcity in the making of blockbuster films “.
Gunn is also known to have written roles for his frequent collaborators, and Michael Rooker, who plays Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy and Savant in The Suicide Squad, says it could be his secret weapon.
“He usually says he wrote it for me – and that’s his ploy,” Rooker laughs. “This is how it makes me want to do it for less money. It works.”
Gunn is also very grateful to those who make these films a reality. At the screening, Gunn spoke for 10 minutes and thanked several of his associates by name, and even asked them to stand up to be recognized when he called them. To end his speech, he thanked Suicide Squad comic book creator John Ostrander, the one man who made it all possible.
“This movie could exist without any of us here. There’s one person it wouldn’t exist without… that’s John Ostrander,” Gunn said.
These discussions between Gunn and DC stem from Disney’s dismissal of the director in 2018 after controversial tweets resurfaced. He was fired as a director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but was eventually rehired after a public apology, handling of the situation and the support of many around the world.
