Taking over from Josh D’Amaro in May as president of Walt Disney World at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jeff Vahle has been tasked with navigating one of the few Disney parks in the world to have reopened to a a time of great uncertainty for the tourism industry. Now he’s taking the time to reflect and define some key benchmarks as 2021 approaches.

Vahle, a 30-year cast member who most recently served as President of Disney Signature Experiences, is responsible for all facets of the resort’s operations, including its four theme parks (Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, EPCOT and Disney Hollywood Studios) two water parks, 28 resort hotels, four golf courses, ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and the Disney Springs entertainment-shopping-dining complex. His tenure so far has been a tough one, with more than 17,000 Walt Disney World cast members fired or fired due to the impacts of the park closures. As the New Year dawns, Vahle and his team must rebuild the Walt Disney World workforce – that is, “when business improves,” according to labor unions.

In an interview with the Orlando Business Journal, Vahle described some of his benchmarks for the company in 2021:

  • Responsible operation of parks and resorts. “The health and well-being of everyone is at the forefront of planning,” he said.
  • Rebuilding the business of 2020 impacts
  • Preparation of the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World Resort.
  • Cast members—Vahle says they will be “at the heart of the momentum of the parks around the milestone.”

Walt Disney World has not officially announced the exact plans for the 50th anniversary celebration, with the exception of some attractions and experiences which are slated to open at some point next year. Recently, it was reported that an undisclosed number of cast members have been recalled or even hired, so it’s possible that Vahle may be responding to his insistence on the real magic makers in parks.

Jeff Vahle has been named one of OBJ“2021 Game Changers”, a group of key industry figures who are essential to its recovery. Other notable changes include Phil Brown, CEO of Orlando International Airport, and Dr. Raul Pino, director of the Florida-Orange County Department of Health.
