Jerry Seinfeld apologized for his role in writing a bizarre cross-species script in the 2007 children’s film “Bee Movie” on Saturday.
During an appearance on “The Tonight Show” to promote the October arrival of “Seinfeld” on Netflix, the 67-year-old comedian referred to his past work on the Dreamworks Animation film he co-wrote and produced.
In recent years, some viewers have questioned the close relationship between the protagonists of “Bee Movie”, a human florist named Vanessa Bloome (voiced by Renée Zellweger) and a bee named Barry B. Benson (voiced by Seinfeld).
Seinfeld seemed to have heard of the conversation, or at least seen the memes, about what some see as the early stages of an interspecies romance.
“I apologize for what appears to be a certain subtle and uncomfortable sexual aspect of ‘The Bee Movie’, which was really unintentional. But after its release, I realized, ‘It really isn’t suitable for children. “Because the bee seems to have a thing for the girl,” comedian told host Jimmy Fallon.
He added, “We don’t really want to pursue this idea in children’s entertainment.”
The team behind “Bee Movie” have already addressed the bizarre relationship between the two characters in the 14 years since the film’s premiere.
On the film’s 10th anniversary in 2017, director Steve Hickner told The New Statesman that Barry and Vanessa are “never going to be sex or anything like that.”
“It was purely that friendship… maybe in Barry’s mind, he thought… but it was never going to be that,” Hickner said.
Barry Marder, a “Bee Movie” screenwriter, acknowledged that the concept of the film was “a little weird at first” during his interview with the store.
Writer Spike Feresten has found that viewers are either “entertained or repelled” by the script. He clarified that there was no real “love affair between the species” in the film, noting that they did not want to “sell” the idea to young viewers.
Feresten attributed all the obscurity in the Vanessa-Barry dynamic to the fact that the writers subconsciously separated the characters from their physical form when developing the script.
“They would just be Barry and Vanessa, and we would write this dialogue down for Barry and Vanessa, and read it over and have to remember, well, it’s a little bee saying that, and the little bee is fighting with her boyfriend, so let’s remind a friend and make it less romantic because it’s getting weird, ”he said.
