Jessie Luévano ’22 improves the lives of the citizens of the university residences of Saint Paul and Hamline.
Currently, Luévano is an intern in the office of Rebecca Noecker, municipal councilor of Saint Paul. Classroom conversations about current events add a valuable background to this political communication work, she said, and give it context. political science and global studies major, with her the story minor.
“Interacting with working professionals demystifies the professional world a bit more,” Luévano said of the internship.
Since its first year, this internship and others at Minnesota Budget Project and Minnesota International Institute helped her move from a student who describes herself as “very in my shell” to a confident speaker and advocate.
The external work blends well with his work on campus with the Residential Housing Association (RHA), where she first put those skills to good use, planning events and working to improve the lives of her neighbors in Hamline dormitories. The experience also facilitated the transition to university.
“Living on campus was how I met my friends. It put me in touch with a lot of people. It has become less scary to live away from home for the first time! said Luévano, whose hometown is Apple Valley.
On campus, Luévano is also president of IGNITE, a student organization for women in politics, with roles as RHA co-chair of United Nations model.
“It was thanks to the student activities and the campus environment that I was able to meet my friends, and it enriched my academic experience and made me successful,” said Luévano.
Luévano is also the recipient of a political science scholarship and the Hamline Prize Success scholarship– which will make their goal of higher education more affordable.
“The scholarships help make everything financially feasible. Thanks to the work and the scholarships, I will graduate debt free, and I am very, very grateful for that, ”she said.

Why Hamline?
I love how well Hamline is interconnected with the community. It had all the majors that I wanted, and the teachers have a really good track record. I did most of the academic research online and decided that I fit the Hamline vibes.
How is the campus environment?
It’s really open and welcoming. There are different pockets of people, but I have found that everyone, even if you have different core beliefs, is ready to learn. It is truly unique.
What is your favorite place on or off campus?
I love Pho Pasteur. I always have lunch there! I also spend a lot of time at Barnes & Noble. Most of the time when I’m hanging out with friends we’re on campus. We love Anderson’s second floor!
