Former Little Mix member Jesy Nelson responded to accusations of Blackfishing in a new interview last week.

Nelson spoke to Vulture around the release of her debut single ‘Boyz’ with Nicki Minaj, which arrived last Friday (October 8). The post noted that Nelson presumably plays with a “Blaccent” during part of the song.

The pop artist previously responded to Blackfishing allegations in August during an interview with The Guardian. Now, in her new interview, the singer was asked, after some thought, if she understood the points raised.

“The whole time I was in Little Mix, I never had any of that. And then I got out of [the band] and all of a sudden people were saying it. I wasn’t on social media at the time, so I left my team [deal with it], because that was when I had just left, ”said Nelson Vulture.

“But I mean, like, I love black culture. I love black music. That’s all I know; that’s what I grew up on. I’m very aware that I’m a woman. white British; I never said I wasn’t.

When asked if she deleted comments on Blackfishing on social media, she replied, “I don’t know about that. Maybe it was my team. After the interview, Nelson’s publicist confirmed that his management deleted some comments and blocked users on Instagram.

“I know the comments on this had already been deleted from my IG account, I only found out after a member of my management team deleted comments. I have spent years being the victim of ‘online bullying, so I limit how much I go on social media,’ Nelson said via email after the interview.

“My management team has access to my account and was trying to protect me and my sanity. “

Nelson canceled follow-up interviews with Vulture to discuss Blackfishing, instead of providing the statement, “I take all of these comments seriously. I would never intentionally do anything to make myself appear racially ambiguous, which is why I was initially shocked that the term was addressed to me.

Nelson announced his departure from Little Mix in December. She signed a solo recording contract with Polydor in May.
