In the statement, the Syracuse police said a 51-year-old man was on the roadside after a vehicle lost control of his vehicle and struck a guardrail.
Boeheim, 74, was driving and noticed the vehicle in the middle of the roadway. Boeheim moved to avoid the vehicle and eventually hit the man, police said.
Police said they had been called to the initial crash around 11:22 pm.
The man struck was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead, according to the Syracuse police.
In a statement released Thursday, Boeheim expressed his deepest condolences to the man's family.
"Out of respect for the people involved, I will not make any other comments for the moment."
According to the police statement, Boeheim and the driver of the other vehicle "remained on the scene and cooperate in this investigation".
Field sobriety tests for both drivers revealed that neither one nor the other was under influence at the time, according to police.
John Wildhack, director of sports in Syracuse, said in a statement that the community was "saddened" by the death.
"Coach Boeheim is in contact with the local authorities and cooperates fully," the statement said. "Out of respect for those in mourning, there will be no other comments at the moment."
He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005.
Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly indicated the day the pedestrian was struck and killed.
