President Biden’s pledge to distribute 100 million COVID-19 vaccines during his first 100 days in office does not mean 100 million Americans will be vaccinated during that time, Dr.Anthony Fauci admitted Sunday.
That volume of vaccinated will only see around 67 million people fully inoculated, as the current two vaccines require two injections, he said. on CBS’s “Face the Nation”.
“Let me clarify this because there was a bit of understanding. What we are talking about are 100 million shots at individuals, ”said the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
“After a hundred days you’re going to have people who get both hits, and some will still be on their first hits,” Fauci added.
Fauci had been confronted with a previous interview in which he told CBS: “You know, the goal that has been set, which I believe is very achievable, is to get 100 million people vaccinated in the 100 first days. “
When asked at the time if that meant “both vaccines,” he replied, “Primary and booster, yes.”
Biden’s “100 million” target has previously been criticized for aiming too low – with data showing the country was already distributing more than a million shots a day when he took office.
When asked last week why he wasn’t aiming higher, he said to a reporter, “Come on, give me a break, man! It’s a good start.
The CDC said it administered more than 20 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines in the United States on Saturday.
20 million more were distributed, the agency said.
