The New York Giants could have second-round pick Xavier McKinney on the active roster for the first time this season on Sunday when they face the Cincinnati Bengals.
McKinney, a safety, has been out all season after suffering a broken foot. He practiced this week. Coach Joe Judge said on Friday he had been “encouraged in the way he gets around”, but would ultimately decide to activate it only after practice Friday afternoon.
“I would say everything went well with him,” the judge said. “Today is going to be a big day for him.”
Linebacker Tae Crowder, who is also training this week to return from the IR, is another player who could be activated on Sunday. The judge did not mention edge defender Oshane Ximines, so his status is unknown.
Graham Gano on track to return
The Giants placekicker is on the Reserve / COVID-19 list, but it looks like Gano could be on track to be activated on Sunday.
The judge said Gano was with the Giants’ coaches on Thursday and was due in practice on Friday.
“I have to watch and see how painful it can be or not,” Judge said. “He didn’t really back away too far in that hotel room to test his range.
“Very optimistic about his luck this weekend.”
If Gano can kick a kick, he will likely take the place of Ryan Santoso’s roster.
The other three players the Giants have on the Reserve / COVID-19 roster – offensive tackle Matt Peart, wide receiver Dante Pettis and tight end Kaden Smith – will not play on Sunday. The judge said he didn’t know who would be the third tackle on Sunday. Options include Jackson Barton, Chad Slade, Kyle Murphy, and Kenny Wiggins.
On the use of the Ring of Honor jerseys on Wednesday in training
The judge said that getting players to understand the history of the organization was “personally important to him.
“For me, the history of this organization is very important. It is very important that all of our new players understand that this team has been around much longer than it has been and that it is up to us to understand the history of this organization, “which came before us.
The judge credited assistant general manager Kevin Abrams with the idea of using the Ring of Honor jerseys for players on the Reconnaissance Team of the Week.
James Bradberry “Should Play”
Veteran Giants cornerback James Bradberry missed his fieldwork Wednesday and Thursday to deal with an unspecified personal situation. The judge said Bradberry was expected in practice on Friday and is expected to be available against the Bengals on Sunday.
“All the signs are that he should play for us,” the judge said.
The judge said Bradberry attended the Zoom meetings.
Business as usual on the offensive line
The judge was asked how the players responded to new offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo, who took over from licensee Marc Colombo this week.
“No different from other weeks,” the judge said. “These guys come to work every week, they’ve worked hard, been very resilient. Right now the focus is on the Bengals … they’ve had a good week of training.
