In a recent episode of The Joe Rogan experienceRogan and Dr. David Sinclair, co-director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for Biology of Aging at Harvard Medical School, launched the podcast explaining how to slow down aging.
They briefly mentioned a very interesting new study that shows that biological aging can actually be reversed, which is a bit serious. Previously, it was thought that biological aging could only be slowed down, the possibility of reversing it would constitute a considerable scientific advance.
The researchers measured this by analyzing their genome, which they did by selecting sets of DNA methylation sites in the genome to create a precise biological age.
To clarify, the biological age is different from the chronological age. For example, your chronological age might be 40, but your biological age is the age that your body and health reflect, which may be younger or older than you actually are.
Even if a reversal of 2.5 years may seem like a small number, it is actually very important and even the researchers were surprised by the results, which was published in the scientific journal Aging Cell.
"I was expecting a slower clock, but not a reversal," says UCLA geneticist Steve Horvath. "It was a bit futuristic."
However, the study group was very small and did not include a comparison group to compare the results with. "It may be that there is an effect," says cell biologist Wolfgang Wagner of the Aachen University in Germany. "But the results are not very solid because the study is very small and poorly controlled."
Harvard's David Sinclair also called for more research on Rogan's podcast: "It was a good study, and as there are only nine people, we have to repeat it," he said.
