CVS and Rite Aid are suspending the sale of certain Neutrogena and Aveeno sunscreens after Johnson & Johnson (J&J) recalled the products over traces of a carcinogenic chemical.

Major drugstore chains confirmed to FOX Business on Thursday that they were cooperating with J&J’s voluntary recall of five of its sunscreen products after some samples were found to contain low levels of benzene.
The chemical “could potentially cause cancer depending on the level and extent of exposure,” according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Walgreens representatives did not immediately respond to FOX Business’s request for comment.
Out of caution, CVS has also halted the sale of CVS Health After Sun Aloe Vera and CVS Health After Sun Aloe Vera Spray and is working with its supplier “to take the appropriate further action,” a CVS spokesperson said in a statement. .
CVS said it is committed to “ensuring that the products we offer are safe, perform as intended, meet regulations and satisfy customers,” the statement continued.
Likewise, a spokesperson for Rite Aid confirmed that the chain was “removing the affected products from the shelves”.
JOHNSON & JOHNSON RECALLS SEVERAL AEROSOL SOLAR PRODUCTS AFTER DETECTING A CANCERIC AGENT
The affected products, packaged in aerosol cans, are Aveeno Protect + Refresh Spray Sunscreen and four versions of Neutrogena Sunscreen: Beach Defense Spray Sunscreen, CoolDry Sport Spray Sunscreen, Spray Sunscreen Invisible Daily Defense and UltraSheer Spray Sunscreen.
The health giant said the benzene was found after testing by the company and an independent lab.

J&J is investigating how the chemical entered products shipped nationwide and is working to remove all lots of the five products from store shelves.
