CHARLOTTE – The Panthers knew they didn’t have to worry about Taylor Moton’s contract this year.
Now they don’t have to worry about the next ones.
Moton, the team’s franchisee, has accepted the terms of a new multi-year contract with the team. The deadline for such a deal was 4 p.m. Thursday, otherwise he would have played the season on his one-year franchise offer.
Moton signed the tender soon after it went into effect, guaranteeing it $ 13.754 million for the year. The new agreement obviously offers more long-term security for him and for them.
Moton, 26, has been one of the roster’s most consistent players in recent years. He’s started every game for the past three seasons, played every snap last year and was only called up for a penalty. He only missed six shots in 2019, and the Panthers need that kind of stability.
He took a few shots in the spring on the left tackle, but he’s obviously more comfortable on the right side, where he’s played most of his career. Until they see the multiple options in the camp on the left, the easiest thing to do is leave him on the right and know he’ll play it right.
The Panthers have been keen to bring several young players to a line that needs help, and now those players have the kind of stable mentor they need, as the team tries to build a line for the future.
He’s the third offensive lineman the Panthers have scored in franchise history, and both left tackles Jordan Gross and center Ryan Kalil have signed long-term deals with the team.
