A mysterious new cluster of Covid-19 cases in New South Wales, Australia continues to grow after 10 new cases were added overnight, according to the NSW Department of Health.
The total number of cases linked to the North Sydney Beaches cluster is now 28. Health officials believe the source may be overseas.
“NSW Health can now confirm that the viral genome sequencing of the Avalon Covid-19 cluster does not match the viral strains seen in recent clusters in Australia. The virus is likely of foreign origin,” the health department said on Friday. in a press release.
“The source of the infection is still under investigation.”
Health officials are asking residents of Northern Beaches to stay home as much as possible on Friday and over the weekends.
“This includes working from home when possible, not visiting friends or family in elderly care facilities or hospitals unless it is absolutely necessary, avoiding unnecessary gatherings and places to go. high risk such as clubs, restaurants, places of worship and gymnasiums, and avoid unnecessary travel outside or in the northern beach area, ”the health department said.
What we know: The cluster’s first cases were reported on Wednesday – the first locally transmitted cases in the state since December 3.
One case identified on Wednesday was a 40-year-old bus driver who took airline crews to and from their hotels. The health department said the conductor voltage does not match the voltage seen in recent clusters in Australia.
“This virus may be of American origin and linked to international crews, but investigations are continuing. No confirmed cases of Covid-19 have been linked to this case,” the health department said.
New South Wales has recorded a total of 4,493 cases of the virus since the start of the pandemic, according to NSW Health.
