It’s contract extension time for some and as the Eagles work to free up some salary cap space, extending some named veterans or young ascendant players can free up some money now, with an award to come later.
Drafted players can’t receive expansions for three seasons, which means a few players from 2017 and 2018 could be in line for new offers.
We have highlighted 9 Eagles who could get contract extensions this offseason.
Jordan mailata
The Eagles’ Jordan Mailata (68) and Matt Pryor (69) are looking to block Sunday, November 1, 2020 at Lincoln Financial Field.
Sports Eagles Cowboys
A former professional rugby player, Mailata was originally selected by Philadelphia in the seventh round (233rd overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft, although he has no previous football experience.
Mailata turned this opportunity into the NFL International Player Pathway program, into a gradual progression that paid off in 2020.
This season, Mailata has shown her potential during the preseason and has embarked on extended playing time after the Eagles’ myriad of injuries.
Mailata was solid in 2020, allowing 32 total pushes and he finished the season in the top 15 according to PFF starting in Week 11, just behind Jets first-round rookie Mekhi Becton.
Even with former first-round pick Andre Dillard returning from injury, Mailata could still be an early favorite to start at left tackle for the Eagles’ rebuild.
Mailata is an athletic freak, who encompasses the traits of being tall, strong, and fast.
Mailata signed a four-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles worth $ 2,549,392 and has one year left on his contract with a payout of $ 850,000 before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2022.
Brandon brooks

Capitalization savings $ 7,540,000
Brooks turns 32 at the start of the league’s new year and is expected to still be among the top goaltenders in the NFL.
Brooks signed a four-year extension with the Eagles in 2019 worth $ 56,350,000 in new money with a total value of $ 71,600,000.
The All-Pro still has $ 38.4 million on his contract, with no money back guarantee and caps at $ 17,554,235 (21), $ 16,162,237 (22) and $ 17,180,000 (24).
If the Eagles believe he can still perform at a high level despite Achilles’ injury, Brooks could be a candidate.
Fletcher cox
2. DT Fletcher Cox: $ 23,879,939
$ 11,940,000 in capitalization savings
Cox, 30, made his sixth straight Pro Bowl in 2020, and he’s still showing elite defensive tackle stretches.
Over the past two seasons, Cox had 10 sacks and 19 quarterback hits.
Cox will have $ 23,879,939 against the cap in 2021 and $ 23,779,939 in 2022, the final year of his deal, plus an additional $ 6.5 million in dead money after his contract ends.
The Eagles could save money by extending Cox for two years, while also banking on the star defensive tackle so as not to fall off the cliff.
Derek barnett
Derek Barnett chooses 14th place in 2017 NFL Draft
Capitalization savings $ 7,248,800
Barnett could be given a contract extension to lower his cap as he’s ready to play on his $ 10 million option for the fifth year.
The former first-round pick could be in jeopardy due to the emergence of Josh Sweat.
Marquise Goodwin
Marquise Goodwin
Savings over $ 2,340,000 cap
Goodwin has landed on the possible cut list, but he’s a quick gap that fits Nick Sirianni’s system and a two-year overtime could save the Eagles money.
Lane Johnson – Extension, restructuring
4. LT Lane Johnson: $ 17,848,500
Either of these movements saved $ 6,912,000.
It’s unclear how much Johnson really left and the right-wing tackle has faced lower body issues over the past two years.
Dallas goedert
Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert (88) catches a touchdown pass as Washington football safety Troy Apke (30) and linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis (54) defend in the first quarter …
Capitalization savings $ 261,558
Goedert was going to get a new deal whether Erz was here in 2021 or not, but doing so now saves the Eagles a few hundred thousand people.
If the Eagles wait and Goedert thrives in Sirianni’s system, he could really cash in 2022.
Avonte Maddox

Capitalization savings $ 1,010,400
Maddox has already hit a raise and if Howie Roseman is to keep his internal draft picks, the little cornerback could be a candidate.
With Jonathan Gannon as the defensive coordinator, Maddox could use a return to the cornerback or free safety.
Josh sweatshirt
2 haste, 2 QB knockdowns, 4 presses, 2 sacks, 8 tackles
The Eagles aren’t saving real money by expanding Sweat, but he’s a building block and a player that Jonathan Gannon could lean on.
Sweat has shown steady growth over the past two seasons. While last year’s campaign was brought to a halt due to injury, Sweat has made major strides as a run defender and pass defender. With Brandon Graham entering the twilight of his career, Sweat could become the focal point of the pass rush for years to come with a solid performance.
Sweat had the best season of his career in 2020, registering 38 tackles (24 solo), six sacks, two defensive assists and three forced fumbles in 14 games in 2020.
Sweat has set career records this season and he will enter the final year of his rookie contract in 2021.
