Josh Peck has broken his silence on the Drake Bell child endangerment scandal. Peck, who starred alongside Bell on Drake and Josh from 2004 to 2007, called the news “disappointing”.
“It is heartbreaking and it is an unfortunate situation,” said the 34-year-old actor. Variety. “It’s disappointing.”
Bell, 35, was sentenced to two years probation and 200 hours of community service for committing crimes against a child. The singer pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to endanger children and one count of disseminating information harmful to minors. He faced up to two years in prison.
At Monday’s sentencing hearing, Bell’s victim addressed court and accused the star child of sexual assault in her impact statement.
“It was such a big part of my childhood, and in return it ruined my life,” said the young girl, now 19. “Jared Drake Bell is a pedophile, and that’s his legacy.”
Bell’s lawyer denied the pedophilia allegations, making it clear that his client was not pleading guilty to sexual assault. However, the actor admitted to having conversations with the woman at the age of 15 which were “of a sexual nature”.
“I just want to say today that I accept this plea because my conduct was bad. I’m sorry the victim was injured in any way,” Bell told the court. “This was obviously not my intention. I have taken this matter very, very seriously and again, I just want to apologize to her and anyone else who might have been affected by my actions. “
Peck and Bell maintained a friendship after the Nickelodeon show ended, albeit at times a difficult one. In 2017, Peck didn’t invite his former co-star to his wedding – and Bell took to Twitter.
“When you are not invited to the wedding, the message is clear …” Bell wrote in since deleted messages. “Loyalty is the key… ALWAYS remember where you are from. “
Bell spoke about the snub to People, explaining, “I was caught off guard. I hadn’t heard of it … there’s no hard feelings.”
The actors eventually reconciled, but the nature of their friendship in recent years is unclear.
