After a judge ordered Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville to give ivermectin to a critically ill COVID-19 patient, the hospital said the drug caused the patient’s heart rate to drop twice.
Leslie Pai, 68, of Cook County, was admitted to NorthShore Glenbrook Hospital with symptoms of COVID-19 on August 31, according to a Chicago Tribune report.
The woman was already taking ivermectin as a preventive measure and brought it to the hospital with her.
The Tribune reported that hospital staff discarded the drug, saying it was not allowed.
Pai’s daughter, Tiffany Wilson, saw her mother transferred on September 11 to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Pai was put on a ventilator and in a medical coma on attorney Condell, the Tribune reported.
Wilson filed a lawsuit in DuPage County against attorney Condell Medical Center after also refusing to administer ivermectin to Pai.
DuPage County Judge Anne Hayes granted a temporary injunction on Friday allowing an outside doctor to administer the drug to Pai.
Dr Harvey Friedman, a pulmonologist, said in an affidavit in court that Pai did not react well after being given ivermectin.
After a dose of the drug, Pai’s heart rate dropped to 28 beats per minute, forcing hospital staff to give him norepinephrine, the Tribune reported.
“In my expert medical opinion … without the intervention of ICU staff at Advocate Condell Medical Center, Ms. Pai was at risk of heart failure, stroke, death and death. other significant damage, ”Friedman said.
In a second affidavit, Dr Dipul Patadia said Pai again experienced a drop in her heart rate after receiving a second dose of ivermectin, forcing hospital staff to give the woman norepinephrine again. .
Pai’s attorneys said her medical records did not show the drop in pulse and claimed her condition had improved, the Tribune reported.
A court hearing in the case is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
