Judge orders hospital to treat patient with dewormer despite warnings from health authorities

A lawsuit could force an Ohio hospital to give one of its Covid patients ivermectin, a deworming drug for cattle that has been adopted by right-wing circles as a treatment for coronaviruses, even though authorities health warns that it is dangerous and ineffective to use as a remedy for the pandemic.

Last week, a county judge ruled that a hospital in the Cincinnati area should prescribe the drug, according to the wishes of the wife of a man who has been battling Covid and the health effects since July.

Jeffrey Smith, 51, tested positive for Covid on July 9, and the order requires West Chester Hospital to provide him with the dangerous drug, on the orders of his personal doctor.

The independent contacted the hospital for comment.

The trial does not say whether Mr Smith is vaccinated against Covid-19, but state data suggests it is likely he has not had the vaccine, as 20,500 of the 21,000 Ohioans hospitalized since January with Covid were not vaccinated.

Ivermectin is an antiparasitic rather than an antiviral drug and is most often used in livestock, with limited approved human uses.

The Food and Drug Administration has warned Americans not to take ivermectin for Covid, warning that it could have serious health effects.

“There is a lot of misinformation around, and you may have heard that it is normal to take high doses of ivermectin. This is wrong, ”writes the agency on its website. “Even ivermectin levels for approved uses can interact with other drugs, such as blood thinners. You may also overdose ivermectin, which can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hypotension (low blood pressure), allergic reactions (itching and hives), dizziness, ataxia (problems balance), convulsions, coma and even death.

Despite these warnings, the patient’s family physician, Ohio physician Dr Fred Waghsul, said federal health officials and the media were engaged in a “conspiracy” to cover up the drug’s effectiveness, an effort which he compares to genocide.

“If we were a country looking at another country allowing these [COVID-19] dead every day… we would have shouted: ‘Genocide!’ “, does he have says Ohio Capitol Journal.

Although ivermectin has been approved for limited uses in humans, as a topical form to treat head lice, the CDC said his clinical trials with the drug did not provide sufficient evidence to justify the use of the treatment for Covid.

Conservative figures, including the senator from Kentucky Rand Paul along with many online conspirators, have pushed to investigate or use the drug as a Covid treatment.

Lawsuits in Chicago and Buffalo, New York, have sought similar results to force hospitals to use ivermectin.
