Ivermectin is generally used for parasitic infections in animals such as horses and cows. It has been used with FDA approval in specified doses for humans suffering from intestinal parasites such as worms. However, it is not intended or used to treat viruses.
Amid a wave of prescriptions for the drug, as well as an increase in the number of people purchasing the livestock version of the drug, the FDA has warned of the dangers.
“The FDA has received several reports of patients who required medical support and who were hospitalized after self-medicating with ivermectin intended for horses,” he added. The FDA said, adding: “Animal drugs are often very concentrated because they are used for large animals like horses and cows, which can weigh much more than us, a ton or more. Such high doses can be highly toxic in humans.
