While Neal has said he needs the feedback to examine the integrity of routine audits of IRS presidents, Democrats have been eager to spot them for any sign of wrongdoing.
After Mnuchin refused, claiming that Neal did not have a “legitimate legislative objective” for wanting the returns, Democrats filed a lawsuit in federal court in July 2019. Since then, the case has evolved at an icy pace. .
The latest back-and-forth is an example of the type of legal feud stemming from his administration that will continue to harass Trump.
In another case, House Democrats said in December they would reissue a subpoena to Trump’s accounting firm for his financial records. And Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. is seeking Trump’s tax returns in another case.
The letter expressed frustration at the delays in Neal’s case.
“Our feeling is enough is enough,” Letter said at Friday’s hearing. “The statute is clear” that the Secretary of the Treasury must give Trump’s returns to Neal.
