Jurgen Klopp says Caoimhin Kelleher was preferred over Adrian due to his ability to play ball as Liverpool beat Ajax 1-0.

Young goaltender Kelelher was a surprise name in goal when news of the squad dropped, with many anticipating Adrian to replace injured Alisson Becker.

Kelleher grabbed attention with a handful of good saves as Curtis Jones scored the winner to confirm the Reds as Group D winners.

Alisson is expected to be sidelined for the better part of the fortnight with a hamstring issue and Ireland’s Under-21 international Kelleher made his Champions League debut at Anfield.

Reflecting on his performance, Klopp said: “Top, top, top.

“It’s a situation where I have to say it was easy to decide for Caoimh because he deserves it but difficult to decide against Adrian because he did well for us.

“He did a really good job, but tonight we needed Caoimh’s package and he’s a top talent, a very good scorer and a top footballer.

“We needed it for Ajax’s pressing. It was really good. At the end of the day, it’s about keeping the ball out of the net and he’s done it twice and he’s done it exceptionally.

Should Caoimhin Kelleher start for Liverpool against Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend? Let us know in the comments.

“He will sleep very well tonight or not at all.”
