Prosecutors said he broke in and obstructed police. The trespassing charge was dropped, but he was tried for obstructing the legal process by interfering with the police.
Thompson testified in court on Tuesday that he was just trying to get information about a friend who attempted suicide.
“We were greeted with complete callousness and a lack of humanity,” Thompson said of hospital and police officials.
A judge suspended Thompson’s 30-day sentence at a county work house. He also fined him $ 200.
“I will continue to fight for people who look like me, people who have no voice,” Thompson told reporters after the verdict was read. “I’m going to continue to be that voice. It’s a bump in the road for me, man.”
Meanwhile, Thompson has faced calls for the resignation of senior DFL party officials, including Gov. Tim Walz, after allegations of domestic violence dating back to 2003 recently resurfaced. He denied these allegations through his lawyer, and none of the alleged incidents led to any convictions.
House Speaker Melissa Hortman, DFL-Brooklyn Park, told House Minority Leader Kurt Daudt, R-Crown on Wednesday that she would take no action against Thompson while her criminal trial was still open and that she would defer to the House ethics committee in the meantime.
