Offensive coordinator Bill Lazor said hello as the Bears’ call-to-play in the second scrum game against the Lions. The offense came out in an I-formation with tight end JP Holtz at the back – and we all know Coach Matt Nagy isn’t there to lead that.
“Bill did a great job,” Nagy said after the Bears’ 24-14 victory at Soldier Field on Sunday.
But then Nagy continued on, providing a sound sample that surely won’t play well for him this week.
“I think at the same time it’s important that we understand that I felt good there as a head coach. It’s true, you know? But we all get together, we discuss what we’re going to call the game, and we do that when I call coins too. You know what I mean? We, as staff, come together. So I think it’s important for everyone to know that.
“When we come up with a game plan together, whether it’s the offensive line coach with Juan (Castillo), or our tight ends coach, or the wide receivers coach, etc., we do it together. Then at the end I have a great opportunity to say, “Yes, I like that” or “No, I don’t” as the head coach, right? (I’m) responsible for it all. It’s real.”
What’s also real is that Nagy can’t win right now even if he’s winning on the pitch. Sunday was the end of a tough game week for Nagy, in which he was shamelessly torn not only locally but nationally for what happened to his team in Cleveland. But it still ended in a division victory and with his rookie quarterback captivating the fan base with precise throws on the field.
