Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’s brother-in-law has been put forward as a potential candidate for the post of US attorney general in the next Biden administration, according to reports.
Tony West, who is married to Harris’s sister, Maya Harris, is a lawyer who served in the Clinton administration and as an associate attorney general in the Obama administration. He is currently the legal director of Uber.
Ben Crump, an attorney for the families of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, endorsed West in an op-ed for USA Today.
“We need an irreproachable attorney general who can mend the bonds of trust between the people and the DOJ, which has a proven track record in civil rights, who has worked with the business community but who is committed to enforcing justice fairly when they abuse it, and who knows the pitfalls of the system for people of color, ”Crump wrote. “In my opinion, there is no one more qualified for this role given this important moment in history than Tony West.

He added: “This Cabinet choice will be one of the most important, given the past four years of civil rights collapse by the Trump administration. Moving forward, we need a strong leader in the Department of Justice who will manage our country’s crisis awareness from our boardrooms to our courtrooms – a leader who feels and understands our pain.
Still, having Harris as a sister-in-law could be a problem for those concerned with nepotism in the administration.

Republican senators have suggested a willingness to confirm Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala., Who lost his candidacy for re-election last month, for the post, according to NPR.
Other candidates for the job include former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, who served in the Obama Justice Department, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, former Homeland Security Advisor Lisa Monaco and Sally Yates, a former Deputy Attorney General who was fired by President Trump early in her term.

Biden has already announced several key appointments, including former Federal Reserve Chairman Janet Yellen as Treasury Secretary and Antony Blinken as Secretary of State.
