Injuries have made life interesting for the Kenston football team so far.
A back injury from tight end Ryan Miller and a finger injury from quarterback Nikko Georgiou forced the Bombers to adapt on the fly and change some players’ position, like JP Germano moving to quarterback and Carson Rivera-Gebeau passing at the close end.
Through it all, the constant has been the offensive line.
The line from left guard Cale Doyle, left guard Connor Kluesner, center Garret Uhlir, right guard Aiden Vanderbilt and right tackle Sean Doyle gave Kenston 694 yards in the last two combined games.
“At the start of the season, that was our plan anyway,” coach Jeff Grubich said of the ball race. “With Nikko and Ryan out, you saw a greater emphasis on this.
“In previous years we have dispersed people and launched it so that our athletes are in space doing what they are doing. But the way these five guys in the front play… they’re tough, physical, blue collar kids. The success we have had over the past two weeks is due to them.
In a win over North, Kenston ran for 314 yards, with Germano running 24 times for 249 yards. In the win over Lake Catholic, Germano amassed 215 yards on 35 carries, while Sean Patrick had 26 on 163, including the game winner with under 20 seconds on the clock.
While Miller remains out – possibly for the season – Grubich has said Georgiou could return this week if medics give him the green light. Kenston (5-0) faces Chardon (5-0) in a state-ranked undefeated team battle.
“The good news is that Nikko has yet to be ruled out,” said Grubich.
