Washington State has separated from its head coach Ernie Kent after five seasons, school announced Thursday night.
Kent, 64, took over in Pullman in 2014 and failed to finish .500 in any of his five seasons in charge. The Cougars finished eighth in the Pac-12 in the first year in Kent and have never passed tenth place since.
Kent was 47-77 early in the season, and Washington State finished 11-21 and 4-14 in the Pac-12.
"I met Ernie earlier in the day and let him know that I would change the direction of our basketball program," Sports Director Pat Chun said in a statement. The Cougars' season ended Wednesday night with a 84-51 loss to Oregon in the Pac-12 tournament.
