Somerset climbed to second place in the Specsavers County Championship He beat Worcestershire, ranked at the bottom of the standings, by 141 points on the final day at Blackfinch New Road, despite the record resistance of young centurion Alex Milton and Steve Magoffin

Jamie Overton and Josh Davey broke their backs at Worcestershire take four wickets in the space of 15 bullets in the first hour after they had picked up the 50 for 2.

They were helped during the morning by little distinguished shots of some of the top six of Worcestershire. But goalkeeper Wicket, replacing injured Ben Cox, made them wait after tea with superb support from No. 11 Magoffin in a record 136 Worcestershire for the last box against any opposition.

He beat the best precedent of 119 by William Burns and George Wilson in 1906 – also coincidentally against Somerset at New Road.

Milton, Cardiff captain MCCU, went to his hundred by cutting Craig Overton off his legs for his 15th limit to go with a six. He came from 172 balls. But Somerset finally sealed his fourth win in eight games when Magoffin was sacked by Craig Overton for 43, shortly after tea to leave Milton unbeaten on 104.1

Victory meant Somerset was moving over Nottinghamshire. There were many benefits to visitors throughout the game, but the most comforting was the shape of Jamie Overton. He was gradually brought back to fitness here bloated with rhythm, aggression and precision.

He finished the game with figures of 31-6-143-8 and received superb support from equally effective Davey with seven wickets.

On the batting front, the new foreign player Azhar Ali had an immediate impact with a century in his debut while Marcus Trescothick, James Hildreth, skipper Tom Abell and goalkeeper Steven Davies also made important contributions. They are still in contact with the teams above them in the battle to stay upright, but there is going to be an improvement in their overall performance, although the eight-wicket pitch of England Moeen Ali be encouraging. Milton also kept his spot for his league debut

Worcestershire was shaken by Moeen's dismissal at the last delivery on the third night and quickly got into trouble in the morning.

Davey was the first to hit the Lions of England The drummer Joe Clarke played the wrong line and was knocked down. Then Jamie Overton hit with successive shots as Travis Head and Ed Barnard took expansive shots.

Head, on his last championship round for Worcestershire, had risen to 46 but threw his bat to a wide delivery and went to goalkeeper Steven Davies. Barnard then attempted another tempting attempt and this time Trescothick got his hands on the second goal

Milton blocked the hat-trick ball, but that was not the end of Worcestershire's troubles. In the next captain, Brett D 'Oliveira put Davey in the good hands of James Hildreth at the first false play.

Milton and Ross Whiteley tried to save some pride and seemed reasonably sure to challenge the game. Somerset attack for 20 overs. The return Jamie Overton broke the partnership when Whiteley (39) was caught behind him to leave Milton unbeaten on the 31st.

Somerset was getting closer to winning after the restart with Jack Leach hitting twice in the same over. Luke Wood drilled the ball to Peter Trego midway through and Dillon Pennington outpaced the spinner and Trescothick's bounced ball slid down to goalkeeper Davies.

But the last man Magoffin accompanied Milton in providing more challenge until the old cut Craig Overton at the back dot ..
