He bought a soccer ball and created a youth empowerment group called Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO). Then in 2007, Posner, then an undergraduate student, spent a semester in Kenya working with SHOFCO. Breaking all the conventions, she decided to live in Kibera with him, and they fell in love.

Their connection persisted, and Posner helped Odede escape political violence and realize his dream of education at Wesleyan University
