China Chilli Festival begins to burn early

An annual chili festival kicked off Monday in Hunan Province, a spicy region of central China, with a chilli contest in which the winner beat 50 peppers in less than a minute.

Local boy Tang Shuaihui won a 3-gram gold 24-carat coin for winning the contest, which is being organized by a local theme park in Ningxiang County and now in its second year.

In the case of ten competitors, each had plates of 50 Tabasco peppers, which ran to be the first to finish the red fruits.

Tang erased his plate in just 68 seconds in a contest held in almost stifling temperatures. The competitors were sitting in a shallow pool filled with water and three tons of floating peppers.

Tabasco pepper has a rank of 30,000 to 50,000 on the Scoville heat scale that measures the spiciness of peppers, which places it somewhere between a jalapeno and a habanero.

The peppers that sway in the pool are however much weaker variety, partly to avoid irritating the skin of competitors.
