By JULIE OWINO, NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug. 14 – The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has cleared 43,400,835 metric tons of clinker in the port of Mombasa since the adoption of the Integrated Customs Management System (iCMS).

KRA Commissioner for Customs and Border Control, Kevin Safari, said the cargo carrying vessel, MV Ptolomeos, was moored at Mombasa port at 6:25 am on Saturday, August 3, 2019 and was unloaded at its destination.

"The shipment was automatically cleared into the system after the importer's customs clearing agent, Express Shipping and Logistics (ESL), made entries into the system and paid the tax of 65 million shillings before the shipment. arrival of the cargo, "said the Commissioner.

The tax collector expects that future bulk shipments of 42,000 metric tons of clinker and 25,540 metric tons of coal will be cleared through the system.

The first arrived at the port of Mombasa on August 7 aboard the MV Boreas Venture and the second should arrive August 21 respectively by the MV African Hoeg.

Clearance of goods by the new system is an important step for KRA to expedite the clearance of goods and improve trade facilitation.

The iCMS system was introduced to replace the 12-year-old Simba system with key innovations, including benchmarking, automated cargo release in the green channel, validation and reporting of importers and the coupling with iTax.

"ICMS will reduce cargo downtime for Mombasa compliant imports because the system does not require human intervention at the document processing center, unlike the Simba system," said the tax collector.

iCMS has been implemented in phases. The air cargo clearance module was put into service on May 10, 2019, while land and sea freight deployment began on July 7, 2019.
