Kevin Chappell (59) Wins 11th Under-60 Round of PGA Tour History

The 2018-2019 season ended too early for Kevin Chappell, who underwent a microdiscectomy after three events last fall. The 2019-2020 season is even more encouraging for the 33-year-old.

Chappell began his second round at A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier with a routine match on his opening hole, number 10. He was his only pair for his first 10 holes. He made a birdie at numbers 11-1 before becoming 11th player in the history of the PGA tour to shoot a lap below 60.

Chappell, who started the tournament with a total of 71, Thursday, had only 10 putts for his first nine holes and was alone in fifth place at 10 under. He is the second player to shoot 59 on The Old White TPC after Stuart Appleby's final tour card at the 2010 tournament.

The only nervous moment for Chappell came on the eighth hole when his lag putt from 54 feet approached 7 feet. He converted his attempt tied and scored an 11-foot goal on his last hole to become the second player to shoot 58 goals in a Tour event, but the attempt was short.

"I did [the birdie] on seven to get to 11 under par for the day and I just told my junior that I wanted to shoot 57, "said Chappell, who is making his first round since the Mayakoba Golf Classic of last year. "I just tried to keep the state of mind to attack.

The round was particularly impressive given Chappell's long comeback after his surgery last November and he was naturally moved after his historic day.

"Ten months ago, I was on the couch and I could not walk. So many people have so much to do to get me back here and make me competitive, "he said. "I have not reached my goal yet, the weekend is long, but it's a step in the right direction."
