On Friday night, the Giants did what they’ve done better than any MLB team except one this season in a savage 6-5 win over the Atlanta Braves – they rode the long ball.
Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, LaMonte Wade Jr. and Donovan Solano all scored a homerun, counting for five of the Giants’ six runs in the thrilling 11-innings win at Oracle Park that ended a two-game losing streak.
After Tyler Rogers lost a 4-2 lead in the start of the ninth by giving up a three-run homerun to Travis d’Arnaud, Solano hit and crushed a homerun in his first at bat since coming out of COVID-19 List of wounded.
The Giants won it late in the 11th inning when Kevin Gausman delivered with a sacrificial volley to score Crawford. San Francisco was not in a playing position, forcing the staff ace to strike, and he succeeded.
For eight innings, everything went according to plan for the Giants. Logan Webb had seven solid innings and the offense crushed three homers.
Webb, the Giants’ best starter in the second half of the season, allowed two runs in the first inning, but Belt quickly wiped out the deficit with his 26th homer of the season, a two-point arcade shot at law.
Crawford led late in the second set with a home run from Braves starter Ian Anderson to give the Giants the lead.
Two innings later, Wade Jr. took the lead with a Splash Hit, his 18th home run of the season.
With four home runs to the win, the Giants now have 227 this season, overtaking the 2,000 team for the second-most in franchise history. Only the 2001 Giants, led by Barry Bonds, touched more (235).
Barring a historic crisis, with 14 games remaining in the regular season, the Giants will surpass 235 homers and set a new bar for homesteads in one season by the franchise.
Webb continued his dominance, allowing six hits and two earned runs in seven innings. He walked no hitters and struck out nine Braves. He was in contention for victory until Rogers ceded the circuit to Arnaud.
With the win, the Giants improved to 96-52 and extended their lead in the NL West to two games after the Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the Cincinnati Reds earlier in the day.
