HANCOCK – Since its beginnings as a buying club in 1973, the Keweenaw Co-op has had a history of growth and change. As a local community-owned institution, it strives to meet the changing needs of its community while also responding to an ever-changing food industry.
His next step is to move to a new location in downtown Hancock. The co-op has entered into a purchase agreement for 612 Quincy Street, the former Keweenaw Buick GMC site.
The move will provide more accessible and efficient space, wider aisles and ample parking. It prepares the cooperative for more growth and service to the community in the future.
“We are thrilled with the opportunity to better serve our community with this location. The new store will have approximately double the space and 60 parking spaces, and will be accessible from Quincy and Hancock streets ”, said Curt Webb, general manager of the co-op. “We have been planning this expansion for a long time and look forward to celebrating the co-op’s 50th anniversary in a bright new home.
The Keweenaw Co-op started in 1973 as a pre-order wholesale buying club to provide the community with natural and organic foods that were not available at the time. His first home was in the back room of Funkey’s Karma Cafe in downtown Houghton.
The co-op grew quickly and quickly moved into a small retail space in Hancock that operated with fully volunteer staff. In 1986, after moving twice more, dramatically expanding its product line and supporting paid staff, the cooperative moved to its current location and opened as a “Complete grocery store”.
Today it remains the exclusive market for goods and services that people cannot get anywhere else in Keweenaw, with a selection of organic, natural and local produce for every diet.
The new location will provide more space for an even wider selection of produce, including more local produce, a delicatessen and more.
The cooperative is a community enterprise. Everyone is welcome to shop at the co-op, but members get additional perks such as discount days, owner deals and special order prices, as well as the opportunity to participate in the democratic control of a local company.
