WASHINGTON – The developer of the Keystone pipeline plans to announce a series of revisions – including a pledge to use only renewable energy – in a bid to gain President-elect Joe Biden’s support for the controversial project.
Aides to Mr Biden have already announced plans to revoke the license, and Canada’s CBC News reported on Sunday night that Mr Biden was planning to do so in one of his first actions after taking office this week.
Mr Biden’s team declined to discuss the report, but said their position on the pipeline had not changed.
In order to save the project, the Canadian company TC Energy Corp. pledges to spend $ 1.7 billion on solar, wind and battery power to operate the partially completed 2,000-mile pipeline network between Alberta, western Canada and Texas, according to officials at the ‘company. They also pledge to hire a unionized workforce and eliminate all greenhouse gas emissions from operations by 2030.
The company’s plans reflect new realities at a time when Democrats are taking dominance in Washington and a time of growing environmental and social concerns.
