Marian University women’s volleyball wins first match

Marian University women’s volleyball (5-3, 1-0 NACC) quickly managed to defeat Alverno in their opener with Inferno 25-17, 25-16 and 25-23.

The Marian offensive continued its streak of late recordings of 45 kills with a 0.231 hit percentage in the sweep. The Sabers also managed to register at least 13 kills in all three sets. The two teams opened tied with Marian holding a 10-9 lead before using a 9-4 stretch to move past a comfortable 19-13 advantage and take the set.

The second set was the best set of the night for the Marian offense, registering 16 kills for just three errors for an attack percentage of 0.325. A quick start saw the Sabers extend a 9-3 lead to a 21-9 advantage. Marian won the sweep after taking an 18-12 lead with a 10-5 run in a third set that saw Marian kill 16 more.

Second year Kaitlyn merrill continued his dominance by late posting a best game of 16 kills on a .282 attacking percentage to go with a pair of aces. Junior Andrea Miller almost had a double-double record of eight kills with 12 digs, while the seniors brooklyn taylor paced the back row with 25 digs.

Marian will attend the opening of the Millikin Invite against Monmouth, Illinois and Illinois College on Friday, September 17th.

Marian University women’s soccer wins conference opener

Marian University women’s soccer (1-3-1, 1-0-0 NACC) opened the conference game with a 4-1 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran.

The Sabers managed to find the back of the net first when the seniors Shannon Coughlin scored his first goal of the season with a junior assist Ashley what at 28:45 of the first half. It turned out to be the only one-half tally that saw the Warriors beat the Sabers 10-7.

Wisconsin Lutheran managed to tie it just 6:22 into the second half, but the tie didn’t last long as the Sabers regained the lead in the 60th minute. Senior Meghan batzner was Marian’s scorer after leading a Welk corner. Just 4:20 later, second year Trinity Grimes scored his first collegiate goal with another assist at Welk. Another sophomore scored his first college goal when Maya Galicia found the back of the net in the 85th minute.

Each team had eight shots in the second half, with WLC taking an 18-15 advantage for the game. The Sabers had 10 different student-athletes who recorded a shot led by Coughlin who landed three shots. Junior Amy birner (1-2-1) faced 10 shots making nine saves to claim their first win of the season in front of goals.

Marian remains on the road to travel to Rockford for a noon NACC game on Saturday September 18th.

Marian University Men’s Soccer opens conference with loss

Wisconsin Lutheran scored two second-half goals to defeat Marian University men’s football (3-3-0, 0-1-0 NACC) 3-1 to open the NACC game.

The score came quickly to open the first NACC game for both teams with WLC converting a penalty to just 5:34 for the opening goal. First-year student Drew cowden then turned an unsuccessful attempt into his first goal of the season scoring just 4:20 later from 17 yards inside the near post.

The remainder of the half was calm on the scoring front, as Marian entered the half with an 11-5 shooting advantage.

The second half started as the end of the first half before a funny bounce off a chip in the WLC box gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead with 17 minutes remaining. Then just 1:23 later, Wisconsin Lutheran was able to score from a corner to establish the final at 3-1.

Marian ended the game with a 24-13 shot lead led by Cowden who had six shots. Senior Kevin Cervantes (3-2-0) made a save in 82:52 of action.

Marian travels to Rockford on Saturday, September 18 for a 2:30 p.m. game.

Brewers drop two in Detroit

The Milwaukee Brewers lost for the second time in two days, hitting just 3 hits in a 4-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers. The Brewers used four pitchers with Brandon Woodruff losing, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits, while striking out 7 strikes in 6 innings of work. The Brewers are on vacation Thursday, then look for the No. 90 win on Friday against the Chicago Cubs.

Brent Suter Brewers nominated for Roberto Clemente Award

Major League Baseball announced that Brent Suter has been named the 2021 Brewers nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, one of baseball’s most prestigious individual honors recognizing community and philanthropic commitment. This is the second time that Suter has received this honor.

TImber Rattlers Cull Loons

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers got a big game from Alex Hall and their pitching staff to defeat the Great Lakes Loons 4-2 at Dow Diamond on Wednesday night. Hall had three of Wisconsin’s five hits, participated in their four runs and was behind the plate for three pitchers from the Rattlers, who recorded thirteen strikeouts.
