SEATTLE – King County health worker Dr Jeff Duchin on Thursday released an update to the King County Mask Ordinance requiring masks at any outdoor event with 500 or more people present.
The order comes amid the recent spike in COVID-19 cases driven by the delta variant and increasing pressure on the healthcare system, according to a press release from King Dow County Director Constantine.
The prescription applies to all people aged 5 and over, vaccinated and unvaccinated, and comes into effect on Tuesday, September 7.
The press release urges anyone aged 5 and over who cannot stay 6 feet away from non-household limbs to wear a mask.
“King County is committed to putting people first, and today’s ordinance fully recognizes the risk to communities and our health care system if we do not take action now to further prevent the spread of the disease. COVID-19, ”Constantine said.
King County has one of the highest vaccination rates of any major metropolitan area in the United States. However, there are still approximately 750,000 people in King County who are not vaccinated, which includes children under the age of 12 who do not have the opportunity to be vaccinated.
There are approximately 320,000 residents of King County who are eligible for vaccination and are not vaccinated.
“We will continue to adapt our response measures to the reality of the evolving COVID-19 epidemic. The Delta variant is more contagious through the air, causes more serious illness in adults, and we have a high level of community transmission in King County and Washington state, ”Duchin said.
Masks will continue to be mandatory in King County for all indoor environments for all ages 5 and up.
