Kirtland’s football team were locked up for a Week 4 game against visiting West Geauga on September 10. But first, the Hornets had to pay tribute to dear friends.

Lined up in two lines in the middle of the field, the soccer players held their helmets over their heads as the 2020 State Champion women’s soccer team crossed the field between the lines to be honored not only by the football team, but also by the local public.

The women’s football team went 17-1 last season and won the Division III state championship.

“With COVID last year, there was never a crowd or anything to celebrate what these girls have accomplished,” coach Tiger LaVerde said. “It was amazing, the first public school to win a Division III state championship. What they did was amazing and they couldn’t celebrate it with their community. It was really nice tonight.

“The kids in Kirtland are wonderful. They all support each other so well. This (pre-game ceremony) was a cool time for these girls. They certainly deserve it.
