KISS co-founder and leader, bestselling author and member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Paul Stanley has spent the last few years developing a project close to his heart. SOUL STATION is a group bringing together some of today’s greatest musicians to pay homage to the greatest artists and songs in the R&B and Soul catalog to keep this vital music up to date. Although a surprise to many, StanleyThe early pivotal roots of this music quietly transformed this passion into a famous touring and recording group. StanleyThe 15-piece group has toured the United States and Japan and recently recorded an album of nine classic soul songs and five new original songs. “Sometimes” will be released on March 5 Universal Music Enterprises. Speaking of new music, Stanley said: “Between us making great SOUL STATION concerts and starting the album I started to think that neither the band nor the music that we love should depend on the past alone, so I started to write with the aim of making the songs flow seamlessly in the present. From what many people I respect have told me, this mission has been accomplished. “
When Stanley conceived SOUL STATION, the band excelled in concert hall settings, playing in smaller, intimate clubs – a setting where Paul Stanley would reflect on those classic hits that were his first inspiration, playing the songs with reverence and respect for the way he and the band think they should be performed and heard.
“Long before I heard the big British bands, I grew up listening to Philly Soul, Motown and much more, “he said.” I had the chance to see Otis redding and Solomon Burke among others. This music and its narration gave me strength and hope even in some difficult days. The great classics of this era are mostly magical medicines and I felt drawn to that era for witchcraft that I think we could all use.

The group is completed by three string players and two horn players of the same stature allowing SOUL STATIONThe sound barrier must be firmly anchored in the past while claiming both the present and the future.

Speaking of how the idea of SOUL STATION came about, Paul Told Scott Lipps: “I was very lucky, because even before seeing [LED] ZEPPELIN or any of the UK bands I’ve grown to love, or the blues bands I’ve seen, I’ve seen Otis redding child, I saw Solomon Burke and TEMPTATIONS. So that’s really the heart of what I do. It’s not all that I do, but it’s in there, and always has been. SMOKE [ROBINSON] AND MIRACLES; early Stevie Wonder; Soul of Philly; Kenny gamble and Leon Huff, all the things they produced – Thom bell. So you have DELFONICS, STYLISTIC, BLUE MAGIC, THE TIME, FOUR TOPS, And so on. So for me that music, unfortunately, was relegated to being samples in someone’s rap songs. These songs deserve so much more, not only to respect but also to be listened to, because when we play these songs live, everyone’s faces light up, because they’re just really great songs.
“SOUL STATION it’s 15 people, and everyone played with everyone from Smokey at Stevie Wonder at Natalie Cole at TEMPTATIONS, Whitney houston, And so on,” Stanley continued. “And it’s really like family. We hang out at my house and have a great time. But what really brought us together is this love for this music and the desire to recreate it with precision, respect. Even some. of those bands, when they ended up playing live, they made these uptempo versions, kind of soulless versions of their own songs, and we play these songs the way they’re meant to be, and that’s glorious.
“Look, I started doing it selfishly, because I love this music, and having it around me, and being able to sing these songs, it’s crazy. And then also to write new songs that come together. really go so well with the old tunes, it’s like writing another page.
“Will this surprise some people? Yeah,” Paul added. “But, honestly, I’m not… Someone said, ‘Oh, you’re reinventing yourself.’ I’m not the champion of blues rock or hard rock or metal or whatever. ‘The Phantom of the Opera’. I am a singer and I choose to sing what I choose to sing at any given time. So really, honestly, it’s just as natural for me to sing Philly soul as it is to sing rock. It’s just that I didn’t do it publicly. “
Last May, Stanley posted a cover version of Smokey robinsonclassic song of “Ooo baby baby”, recorded by SOUL STATION. In a statement accompanying the clip, Stanley said: “These are tough times. In 2019, Stanley said to Real Radio 104.1 radio that he wanted to wait for the right moment to release the SOUL STATION LP. “It really deserves our full attention and my full commitment,” he explained. “So until we can do some great live performances – the band is amazing live – and until we can promote it the way we should, it’s just going to simmer.”
He was asked if he hates KISS the fans for making an album that is stylistically very far removed from the music that its main group is best known for producing, Stanley said: “I’m sure some people prefer me to do KISS album or something like that, but when you connect with me you understand that we’re both together, and sometimes I have to do what I have to do. And that’s part of the joy and the reward for me. So I prefer to do a super SOUL STATION album now than to tamper with KISS or the KISS legacy and do something that I really don’t feel like right now. ”
