The number of babies born in September set a new record in September.
According to statistics released by the National Statistical Office, the number of newborns in September decreased by 13.3% over the same month last year, to 34,600.
This is the smallest since September 1981 and the largest decline in 16 years in 2002.
An official at the National Statistical Office explained that the trend to give birth to a date rather than a natural birth had recently increased.
The number of marriages decreased by more than 20% to 4,300, due to the Chuseok holiday. This number was the lowest in September.
